Chloe Pearl FuYuan Cary, God Crafted Your Name

puzzle-bottom-reveal-copyIn our family, we are ALL about the meaning of names. Each child’s name was carefully crafted, full of intent. Ethan Christian Cary = Strong and Wise Christian Fortress/River. Daniel Joshua Cary = God is my Judge, God Saves, Fortress/River. Andrew Michael Cary = Brave/Manly, Who is like the Lord?, Fortress/ River. Abigail Candice Cary = Father’s Joy, Sparkling/Queen, Fortress/River.

When we decided to adopt we knew that her name would have to be rich with meaning too. For months we considered names. We love Biblical names! We love the idea of our kids reading their Bibles and seeing their names in there. Our children’s names represent strong Godly people. Their names are steeped in meaning.

Chloe’s name was picked out far before we knew who she was. “Chloe” means green sprout/ fresh blossom. It represents new growth, life, and new beginnings. “Pearl” was taken from the parable of the pearl of great value/price/ worth (we will run recklessly toward her, she is worth it, she is great in value). We love what her name represents!

The discussion of name meanings doesn’t come up often in our family but we were having dinner last night and somehow the topic came up. We talked about everyone’s name in our family and what they mean. We ended with talking about Chloe’s name and telling the kids what it means.

Two days ago I had sent an email to two of my Chinese friends asking if they could translate her name for us so that we could know the meaning. They both replied that they needed the Chinese Characters in order to tell us the meaning. I requested them from our adoption agency and sent them on.

About 1 hour after the name discussion over dinner last night, the name meanings for Fu Yuan rolled in. One person replied and then the next, both said the same thing. Fu Yuan means “Blessed Garden”. I just about flipped. My heart was overwhelmed with joy. Confirmation! Fu Yuan is our daughter, no question! It isn’t just chance! God was crafting her name far before I ever started. He named her Blessed Garden and she began to grow. As the idea of our daughter grew in our hearts we named her Chloe (green sprout/ fresh blossom). We knew that she would be a new beginning for our family and that we would be a new beginning for her. God will continue to grow her as he continues to grow us. She will blossom and fruit as we will also blossom and fruit in new ways. This whole process will be a beautiful thing.

I love when God gives confirmation! Something in me happened. God knew that this was exactly what would speak to me. Fu Yuan is our daughter! We are her forever family. God crafted this.

Adoption always begins with a story of brokenness… Brokenness isn’t God’s first plan. But when brokenness happens He is in the business of healing the broken hearted. He is in the business of restoring and making new. He turns ashes into beauty. He’s in the business of growing us and making us blossom. And from that blossom comes fruit. He is the gardener. He takes us full circle. He knows us so well. He has a plan for us. He has a purpose for us.

Chloe Pearl FuYuan Cary, we are crazy about you. We love you and we will love you forever. We have the privilege to grow together! We are coming to get you and we can’t wait to meet you face to face. We can’t wait to hug you and kiss you. God does great things! God knows your name and he created you fearfully and wonderfully.

Adoption Questions Answered!

red iwnlyaoWe are so thankful for you! We’re thankful for our family and friends, and for our community that has stood up and taken an active interest in our adoption. From our hearts to yours—THANK YOU!!!!

You all have had so many questions and I hope to answer a few of them here.

So let’s start out with the basics:

“Why are you adopting?” I love to start this one off with the answer, “Why not?” I don’t mean it in a disrespectful way. But why not? What if we all adopted one child and brought him or her into a loving home? We could make a radical difference! Can you imagine a world like that?

But let me take you way back– When John and I were in our early 20’s we talked about adoption and we were instantly drawn to adopting from China. At that time families in China were only allowed to have one child and girls were often given up because a boy was wanted. After looking into adoption we soon found out that we weren’t old enough and that the minimum age was 30. We were 22 and 24 so we had a while to wait. We put it in the back of our minds and moved along with life.

When John was in law school he brought it up again (27 and 29). I was terrified that I wouldn’t or couldn’t love an adopted child the way that I loved Ethan and Daniel (yep, we only had two kiddos at that time), plus John was in school, so we pushed it to the side at that point in time.

We had two more kids and the adoption conversation has come up through the years but it was never the right time. Plus fear has always been a big factor for me— What if I didn’t love them the same as my biological kids?!!? Plus, it just costs too much! Right?!?

This January I believe that God laid adoption on my heart again in a fresh way. We started to talk about it a little but then soon after I had a day where I felt this unexplainable love for a child that I didn’t even know. It was overwhelming. And at that moment I knew that I could… I COULD love an adopted child just as much as I love my bio kids. God made it so clear to me. Thinking back, when I just had Ethan I wondered if I could ever love another child as much as I loved Ethan, and yep, I love Daniel just as much as I love Ethan! Your heart has room!

Another reason that we are choosing to adopt is that we have a love and respect for life. One of the ways that we can choose to take an active role in supporting life is to adopt–to bring a child into our family whose birth mother said “yes” to life. Enough said!

God loves adoption!  James 1:27—“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Ephesians 1:5– “He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will…” And if you look at the verse before that, we were CHOSEN!!! On to the next question!

“Why China and why a girl?”— Why not? Ha! You had to know that I was going there! The easiest answer for both of these is that this is where our adoption dream started and we have had a picture in our minds ever since then of what our adoption will look like. To add to that though, we love the idea of Abby having a little sister and she LOVES the idea too!!!

“China adoptions are now only special needs adoptions. Does that scare you?”—   Yep! Remember I told you that I have some fear issues!!! But is it worth it? Yep!!! Let’s be honest, we live a pretty comfy life with healthy kiddos. All of our kids play sports and can go play outside and wrestle and jump and act crazy. We visit the doctor about once a year for well child check-ups and that’s about it. I am so thankful that my kids are “healthy”. What about our “Little Pearl” though? Did she ask for this medical hurdle? No. Did she do anything to deserve it? No. Is she worthy of love and a family? Yes! Yes, she is! And that is what we are going to do! We are going to run recklessly to her and we are going to love her deeply. We are going to grab ahold of her and never let go. She is going to be a part of our family FOREVER and we are going to fight for her. She will be chosen! We are going to support her and love her fiercely. We will cherish her and watch her be exactly who God has called her to be. She has been wonderfully, perfectly, and beautifully made for a powerful purpose! And we are lucky to be able to be a part of her story!!!

“Doesn’t it cost a lot?”—  Yes it does! I’ve heard so many people say to not let the financial part stop you though, and we haven’t. We are actively fundraising and we will apply for some grants later on as soon as our home study is completed. So far everything is going very well and I’m reminded often that “where God guides He provides”… so we will keep moving forward and watch God do amazing things!

Thanks for supporting us on our adoption adventure! You mean so much to us! Please take a minute to listen to the song below… it has become my adoption anthem!

What does your bracelet represent?

Every piece of jewelry that we make will include an authentic freshwater pearl. Why a pearl?

Not long after God laid adoption on our hearts in such a profound way, I believe God gave me this verse:

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. Matthew 13:45-46 (NIV)

Yes, I know… Bear with me here because I’m going to take this verse out of context. You see, I made a very strong and direct correlation between our daughter in China and the pearl spoken of in this verse. Pearls have a huge importance in Chinese culture so my mind didn’t have to go far to make this connection. Our Little Pearl has great value! She is loved by God, and He has a plan and a purpose for her life. God has given us the opportunity to sacrifice our money, our time, our love… ourselves… for her. She is worth that and so much more. So here we stand. We’ve found a pearl, even though we have no idea who she is or what she looks like…A beautiful pearl of great value! And we will run recklessly toward her. We will abandon our money, our comfort, our vain covering of security and run headlong into uncertainty. We will fight for her, pray for her, cry for her, rejoice because of her, and one day soon we will hold her and breathe the same air that she breathes, we will feel her heartbeat against our own, and we will wipe away her tears. We’ll bring her into our family and she will be HOME. She will have a daddy, a mommy, three big brothers, and a big sister. We will love her forever. She is a pearl of great value!

Let me not mislead you though. I.get.scared. Yep, that’s right! I have a bunch of questions that invade my mind.  Possibilities. Scenarios. Fears. And God gently reminds me (as He has to do so very often)… Do not fear. Let faith replace fear.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 NIV

It’s not just about me though. How about our Little Pearl (yep, that’s nickname status)? She is already a fighter. Every day she must push fear aside and move forward. She has pain and loneliness. She has tears and apprehension.  Yet, SHE IS BRAVE!!!

And finally, the arrows on the bracelets.

See, children are a gift from the Lord. The children born to us are our special reward. The children of a young man are like arrows in the hand of a soldier.  Happy is the man who has many of them. Psalm 127:3-5 NLV

I think that verse speaks for itself– Children are a gift, and a reward. They go out from us and make a difference in the world around them. They bring happiness. They are so worth the cost!

At the very beginning of this post I wrote, “Every bracelet tells a story. Every bracelet has a purpose. Every bracelet asks something of you.” So what does the bracelet ask of you? I ask that as you look at your bracelet that you would consider the meaning that it holds. Please pray for our Little Pearl. Ask God to fill her with courage, strength and love. Then make it personal and ask God to strengthen you and fill you with courage. Look at the arrows and pray for your children or the children in your life.

  • Children are a gift from the Lord
  • Children are our special reward.
  • Children are like arrows in the hand of a soldier
  • Happy is the man who has many of them.
