How do you feel about adventures? In this family, we are all about it! In fact, I think that we thrive off of our desire for adventure. Life is fun… we love life!!! There is so much to explore, so much to experience, so much to do! Maybe part of it is that we just don’t want to miss out! Life is short and we are packing it as full as possible. No matter what the motive, we have a track record for sure– We got married at the absurd ages of 17 and 20. We had our first kid a year later. Followed by another. Followed by another. Followed by another. (Wow, I had to count a couple times to make sure that I got all of my “another”s in there). John has been in and out of the military. We have been to all 50 states and a slew of other countries. We’ve left security and run headlong into the adventure of a new city and professional school, and then another new city and grad school. We’ve owned our own business. We’ve adopted a pound puppy (come on, you know that is an adventure). We’ve built two houses. We have done home school, public school, and private school. We’ve backpacked through canyons out west, zip-lined in Costa Rica, and slept at the base of an spitting volcano. We’ve mountain biked in the Canadian Rockies with a gigantic bear (just ask). We have been out in the middle of the ocean by ourselves, 100 ft underwater without another soul in sight (btw, don’t wait too long to go down under the water on a drift dive… and if you’re a man, don’t wait on your wife to clear her ears…sorry John). Last, but surely not least, we have driven from Florida to Alaska and back and all that that entails. I think you get the point… we have this love for adventure that runs through our blood!

There is no better adventure than being a Christian though. When you have Jesus you have everything! Of course I don’t mean monetary things… I mean the things that matter. You have love, you have hope, you have joy, you have meaning. With Jesus you have a firm and stable foundation… He is always with you, He will never leave you! You have guidance, and healing, and a future. You have peace… peace unexplainable. There is no better adventure!

All of this leads to our next Great Adventure (yep… proper noun status right there)… ADOPTION!!!

These two verses have grabbed a hold of our hearts and minds:


We are just at the very beginning stage of this… our toes are right on the start line and we are leaning forward with anticipation. The days seem to be filled with prayer and research. We are excited and scared of the unknown (John’s main concern might be that he would have to eat rice, or dumplings, or something unknown to him…make sure that you pray for him). We have picked our country, filled out some papers that have begun the rolling of the ball. I could get into the “why” and the “how” of this but I think that I’ll save that for another day.

For now, please pray!

  • Pray for our future daughter/sister
  • Pray for her birth parents– whatever their situation might be that leads/led them to give up their daughter, and pray that they learn about Jesus’ love for them
  • Pray for her care– place people around her who will love her and nurture her
  • Pray for the doctors who will attend to her— give them wisdom, guide their hands
  • Pray for John and I to be still and know that God is God and that we are not, and to follow His lead
  • Pray for Ethan, Daniel, Andrew, and Abby– this is a big transition
  • Pray for wisdom in fundraising, and for the process in general. There is A LOT of paperwork in the days ahead!
  • Pray for the village that will surround her– yep that’s you!!! Thank you for that! We couldn’t do this alone!

I have to close with this scripture because I just can’t get it out of my head:

For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”
